The sinificance and the history of the temple
Among the Holy Trinity (Trimurti), Brahma is the creator, Vishnu is the preserver, and Shiva is the destroyer of the universe. Brahma, being responsible for creation, began to feel proud, thinking he was the most important. He thought that without him, the universe wouldn’t exist and began to develop ego, believing himself greater than Shiva. At that moment, to subdue Brahma’s pride, Lord Shiva manifested himself in a special form…
At that time, Lord Shiva, in the form of Kala Bhairava, appeared and severed Brahma’s fifth head to humble him. Not only that, Shiva cursed Brahma to lose his power of creation. Realizing his grave mistake, Brahma was filled with deep regret. In repentance, he set out on a pilgrimage to seek liberation from the curse. During his journey, Brahma visited this sacred place — the present Brahmapureeswarar Temple.
At this location, he installed twelve Shivalingas around the Brahmapureeswarar shrine and started performing abhishekam (ritual bathing) every day using water from the Brahma Theertham (sacred pond) here. He worshipped Lord Shiva with utmost devotion, seeking forgiveness.
Moved by Brahma’s sincere repentance, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati blessed him, lifted his curse, and restored his creative powers — so says the ancient legend associated with this temple.
As you enter the temple, there is a large mandapam (hall). In this hall, you’ll find the Dwaja Sthambam (flagpost) and a beautiful Nandi (sacred bull) statue. Proceeding inside, you can have darshan of the Brahmapureeswarar Lingam. However, please note that photography or videography inside the sanctum is not allowed. After worshipping the main deity, if you perform pradakshina (circumambulation) around the temple, you will come across the shrine for Lord Brahma.
Around the temple, you can also find five of the twelve Shivalingas installed by Brahma. Additionally, the samadhi (final resting place) of Sage Patanjali Maharshi is located here. (Earlier, taking videos inside was allowed, but now it is restricted.)
